The Power of Visuals & Colour

The Power of Visuals & Colour – A picture paints a thousand words as the saying goes. We gather and process masses of information from just one image. We focus on how it makes us feel and what the image is telling us. Just from one glance at a image, we can tell if we want to know more or not. In this day and age, people have shorter attention spans than ever and we just don’t have the time or patience to read why we should be buying into a product. This is why creative visuals have become one of the best forms of marketing. Audiences will know within two seconds if they are interested or not.

As powerful as they are, it puts a lot of pressure on marketers to get it right. Every element of the visual becomes detrimental to how successful a campaign is. Your audience won’t waste their time if the layout isn’t appealing or if the font isn’t clear. Not to mention where colour falls into this.

Colour

You might not have considered colour to be an issue before. However, the colour is what we actually base our initial opinions on, whether we realise it or not. It links back to our natural instincts. Colour influences how we perceive a brand. Every colour that we use triggers a different mood without us even thinking about it.

  • Blue
Blue is the colour of trust, respect, intelligence and honour. If you want your brand to be well respected then this may be the colour for you. It also gives a calming effect to most people.
  • Green
Green portrays a feeling of independence, change, healing and learning. If your company relates to any of these, green is the colour for you. For example, green is a great colour for schools as children learn and gain the independence they need for later in life.
  • Yellow/Orange
Yellow and orange inspires optimism, enlightenment, joy and enthusiasm. Using yellow gives people the impression that you are an approachable, friendly business.
  • Red
Red generates energy, strength and passion. If your business creates a product that is based on peoples passions and hobbies, this could be the colour for you.
  • Purple
Purple represents wisdom, dignity and maturity. Therefore, if your company has an older target market, purple would probably be the best colour for you to use.

It’s important to remember that colours have different meanings in different countries and cultures. Rather than selecting colours because you think they look good, do some more research into how they are perceived by consumers. This way, you will be increasing the chances of customer engagement on your visuals.
